THE IMPACT OF MOBILIZATION ON THE RECOVERY OF CRITICAL PATIENTS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction: The intensive care unit (ICU) is an environment equipped with advanced technological resources for the treatment of critically ill patients, who often require prolonged care. However, bed restriction in the ICU is a factor that negatively affects patient mobility. The lack of movement during hospitalization contributes to the development of complications affecting multiple body systems. In this context, early mobilization has been adopted by physical therapists as a strategy to prevent such complications.
Objective: To discuss the benefits of mobilization in the ICU.
Methodology: This is an integrative literature review conducted using the LILACS and PubMed databases, covering publications from the last five years, in English and Portuguese. Incomplete and duplicate articles, as well as those that did not address the research question, were excluded. The search was carried out in August 2024.
Results: Early mobilization is a technique that should be applied to critically ill patients in the ICU, as it can reduce hospital length of stay and, consequently, the duration of mechanical ventilation, the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness, and the overall rate of clinical complications. These outcomes have a direct impact on reducing hospital costs and improving patients’ quality of life. On the other hand, certain barriers hinder the implementation of this technique, such as invasive and noninvasive procedures to which patients are subjected, including sedation, level of consciousness, and medical interventions. However, the main limitation to early mobilization is hemodynamic instability. Furthermore, when early mobilization is applied through standardized protocols, it promotes better adherence to the technique and leads to improved patient outcomes.
Conclusion: In summary, early mobilization is safe and effective in the ICU and contributes to improved post-discharge quality of life and reduced hospital costs.
