Abstract

Aflatoxin contamination in staple crops such as maize and groundnuts represents a critical challenge for public health and food security in Mozambique, due to its impact on child development and economic losses for smallholder farmers. In this context, the general objective of this study was to analyze the quality of groundnuts and maize during the implementation of the aflatoxin reduction project in the agricultural communities of Mogovolas district between 2019 and 2022. Under an interpretive paradigm and employing a case study strategy, the methodology adopted a mixed-methods approach involving 388 producers and 3 technicians, utilizing questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and laboratory analyses. The results demonstrate that the application of mitigation technologies such as biocontrol with Aflasafe and the use of Type A dryers resulted in a significant reduction in contamination levels compared to the pre-intervention scenario, validating the technical efficacy of the biotechnological package. The main conclusion indicates that the project achieved technical and laboratory success. Comparative analysis confirmed a significant downward trend in crop contamination, validating the principle of competitive exclusion between Aspergillus flavus strains.
